Masahisa Fukase - Japanese Photographer
Masahisa Fukase was born in Bifuka (Nakagawa district, Hokkaido) 1934 - 2012. He graduated from the career of artistic photography at Nihon University in 1956. He was a companion to two great Japanese post-war photographers: Shomei Tomatsu and Daido Moriyama, Photographic school that they baptized with the name “The Workshop”. He took photographs of silhouetted crows, in shadows, reflected in snow and cement, in flocks, watchers in aerial cables, deployed over fractions of sky, among others. In Japanese mythology, the crow is a bad omen figure, dangerous. The Japanese believe that you should avoid looking at the raven because that implies that something terrible will happen. Perhaps Kukase, in photographing ravens, felt that he deserved such an omen and waited for it with open arms, or perhaps the sadness that was invading him was so great (for having lost the person he loved) that he thought that nothing worse could happen to him ... however, Fukase spent ten years exchanging glances with crows among other images of great melancholy.
